In general, we can setup a 1 to 1.2 kWp system in a 100 sq. ft. shadow-free area. In addition, we need to determine design parameters such as cable length required, meter location, space for mounting smart inverter, etc.
We will also require a copy of your latest electricity bill, so that we can check the sanctioned load, existing average monthly consumption and the average tariff per unit. Based on this, we will be able to design the ideal Solar PV system for your facility
Our installation will be Grid- connected. As per Discom rules in MH, we are allowed to install 80% of sanctioned load for Net- metering purposes, till a limit of 1 MW. We can definitely install a higher capacity, but Net metering benefits beyond 1MW will not be applicable.
We will only be limited by feasible shadow free area in your premises to setup a Solar PV system of desired capacity.
We need to consider the number of units being generated by Solar PV system. On average, 1 (one) kWp system will generate 4 units per day, on a yearly basis. So ‘xyz’ kWp system will generate:
Average Monthly Solar Units Generated = ‘xyz’ * 4 * 30
Average Annual Solar Units Generated = ‘xyz’ * 4 * 365
The 4 units is taken as average over a year. Generation is highest in Winters and Summers, when you can get upto 5.5 to 6 units as well and lower during Monsoons. Many competitors assume generation to be 4.5 or even 5 units, but that will be for lower number of days across a year and hence is misleading.
The prime benefit for you will be a significant reduction in your electricity bill. While the Solar PV system will provide you a number of units as calculated above, the rest of your requirements can be met from your existing grid connection. You will only need to pay the difference of Grid consumed units and Solar generated units, which will be clearly mentioned in your monthly bills.
Further, with Net- metering policy, if your facility generates more units than you consume, the balance is returned back to the grid (via the bi-directional meter, or Net-meter). You are financially compensated by the Discom for this returned power, based on a fixed price per unit, on an annual basis.
Commercial and Industrial customers get an Accelerated Depreciation (AD) benefit of 40%.
Domestic consumers, schools and hospitals on the other hand get a 30% subsidy from MNRE. Some new policies supporting Solar PV installations do get introduced by central and state governments from time to time, which is industry- dependant.
The Solar PV system is broadly categorized into 2 types: Grid- connected and Off-grid. Grid- connected systems are synchronized with the existing grid connection, and hence do not require any energy- storage or backup. Any excess energy generated is returned back to the grid, this effectively provides seasonal storage on the grid itself.
Off-grid systems feature a battery backup in addition to standard components, for storage purpose. These systems are typically setup in places with no grid connectivity, or extremely poor electricity supply, or for applications that only require short period of usage, such as agricultural pumps, street lights, advertisement hoardings etc.
However Off-grid systems with battery backup are costlier to setup and maintain as well, as the batteries need to be looked after and changed as per their life. In places where load shedding is an issue, DG sets are more commonly used as backups. During a power cut however, Solar PV systems would also be cut off so as to protect any workers repairing power lines.
